A few months ago, Rachel bought an Alan Jackson hymn album. Elias fell in love with song 12 - “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” He simply calls it “Leaning, Leaning.” Today, as I turned on the radio on the way home from church with Linnea and Elias in tow, that CD started and played the final note of “Leaning, Leaning” and then skipped to the next track.
Elias insisted that we go back and listen to all 1:28 of the song. So we did. Over his sister's singing, I heard his little three-year-old boy's voice singing right along with Alan Jackson. When it finished he had one word for us - “Again.” So we listened to it again.
He could have listened to that song on repeat for the entire drive or maybe even the entire afternoon.
For a number of years, Linnea has been joining me in the sanctuary for big church each Sunday morning after she’s done with Sunday School. Since Elias is now in her Sunday School class, he’s been joining us.
Today they weren’t able to go to big church and they were sad about that. They love listening to the church worship. They often will sing along as they color or eat their snacks. Sometimes they will stand themselves and sing as loud as they can.
“Leaning, Leaning” allowed Elias to worship God, even though it wasn’t with all of the adults in big church. While Linnea loved singing that song too, she really wanted some say in what song she got to sing to as well. We landed on “Battle Belongs” - a song that was also a part of big church this morning.
During the first chorus, I could hear her voice over the music. When I looked in my rearview mirror a few moments later, I saw the face of a 4-year-old engaged in worship. She wasn’t just singing, her heart was praising God.
I’ve reflected on that many times today. We are all made to worship our creator. I want to make sure that I worship my Creator with the same heart and focus as my daughter does.
Sing to the LORD! Give praise to the LORD! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.
- Jeremiah 20:13
